The government of Philippines has appealed for international help to deal with the aftermath of the devastating floods that have killed 240 and left hundreds of thousands of people homeless.
The homes of nearly 1.9 million people in the capital, Manila, and surrounding areas were inundated by flood water unleashed by tropical storm Ketsana over the weekend.
With two new storms brewing in the Pacific, the defence secretary, Gilberto Teodoro, pleaded for help on national television. One of the storms could hit the northern Philippines this week and the other early next week.
“We are appealing for international humanitarian assistance,” said the minister, who is chair of the National Disaster Co-ordinating Council. (more…)
NEW YORK — Le président américain Barack Obama a donné une interview enregistrée à David Letterman, le présentateur du “Late Night Show”, un programme vedette de la nuit sur le réseau de télévision de CBS, pour gagner plus de soutiens à son plan de réforme de la santé.
Quand le président s’est prêté au jeu de l’entretien télévisé, le présentateur avait trouvé dix raisons pour lesquelles il avait intérêt à passer dans son show. Selon le journaliste, Barack Obama a pu dire oui sans y avoir réfléchi, “comme Bush à propos de l’Irak”.
Mais le président, qui avait écouté auparavant dans le programme une femme parler d’une pomme de terre en forme de coeur, a expliqué qu’il était venu pour voir cette patate. L’ayant vue, il l’a jugée remarquable. (more…)

Oscar de la Renta’s look was well-traveled, seeming to draw inspiration from style traditions in Africa, South America and Southeast Asia. Milan has ended New York’s five-year reign as the world’s top fashion city, while Hong Kong and Sao Paulo have sashayed into the top 10, according to an annual survey of top fashion cities.
The list was compiled by the Global Language Monitor, a U.S. based non-profit group that tracks the frequency of words and phrases in the media, on the Internet and throughout the blogosphere. (more…)
